The developers confirmed at a meeting on Friday that the next hard fork of Ethereum, known as Constantinople, will be postponed until early 2019.
The original goal was to start in November this year, but the developers chose to postpone the hard fork release after finding several bugs in the code published on the test network. Now the conference has decided to release it sometime in late January or February, and the developers agreed on Friday's conference call that it would be unwise to advance the hard fork next month.
In the live broadcast of the conference, developer Afri Schoeden commented on this: "I always feel that we are working hard for the release as scheduled. We should take a break and relax and see what happens."
Constantinople made five backward incompatible changes to the network, from minor code optimizations to more controversial changes, such as reducing the amount of new ETH created per block.
Delays may also affect other proposed changes. Martin Holst Svender, the head of security at the Ethereum Foundation, said that there may be time to add another proposal called "ProgPow" to Constantinople.
ProgPow aims to support Ethereum's resistance to professional mining hardware. Many people believe that this may lead to the use of GPU mining and may cause some concentration effects.
Svender said: "I will say it here. If we are sure that Constantinople will be released in January or February, then I might try to incorporate ProgPoW into Constantinople."
ProgPoW was discussed in the early core developer meeting, but everyone decided not to add the code to Constantinople, but if a consensus is reached, another hard drive will be used shortly after the release of Constantinople. Join Ethereum.
Despite this, Hudson Jameson, the communications officer of the Ethereum Foundation, said on Friday that developers have done a lot of work to prepare the network for Constantinople's mainnet-or on-site blockchain.
He highlighted one of the projects, he said: "When we switch Hash power, we need to coordinate more with the miners, including the main network."
