With the emergence of tens of billions of connected devices, from smart refrigerators to smart showers to smart cruise ships, the Internet of Things will be rapidly evolving. But to some extent, wireless data networks can't solve the problem of speed congestion on connected devices, which is why technology companies are committed to upgrading their networks to 5G networks. 5G is the fifth generation mobile network, the transmission speed will reach several Gbps, and the network we use now is only a few Mbps.
Intel wants to be a big player in the 5G game. At CES 2017, Intel introduced the first 5G modem chip. In the future, this chip will drive countless connected devices to transmit data at high speed. These connected devices can be connected to cars. , drones, robots, AR glasses, and more. In response, foreign media Venturebeat interviewed Rob Topol, general manager of Intel's 5G business and technology department, at CES.
Venturebeat and Topo mainly discuss whether 5G really will speed up the device and if the increase in the number of devices will really slow down the network.

Reporter: How long have you been a general manager?
Rob Topol: I have only been in this position for a few short years, but I have been with Intel for 17 years. I was born in the manufacturing industry and later switched to SOC design. I have only been in contact with the wireless field in recent years. With the launch of 5G business in Yinger, managing 5G business and technology has become a relatively new position. My job is to manage the equipment and ensure that any prototypes, test beds, and the use cases we are doing are in line with all planned areas of 5G business.
This is not just a question about mobile phones. In fact, we often say that 5G is a post-smartphone era. Apart from smart phones, it is more about other businesses. Smartphones are only part of it. Others include driverless. Aircraft, home networks, AR, and other devices that not only need 5G but also benefit from 5G. My job is to make sure we have a test bed and a partner to build such a prototype.
Reporter: Introduce the 5G chip released by Intel a few days ago.
Rob Topol: Actually we have two products for 5G. In the past year, we have built a mobile test platform. At the Mobile World Congress a year ago, we showed off the first 5G prototype.
One of the products we launched at this CES is the Intel Go Smart Driving 5G vehicle communication platform, which provides an end-to-end solution for autonomous vehicle manufacturers. The platform has a built-in 5G FPGA modem, as long as there is a 5G band available, you You can use this scheme to achieve transmission speeds of up to 7Gbs. It can be used to download HD maps and update car media content online, and we will be ready to develop this feature in the car next month.
The second product on display is Intel's first generation of 5G modems worldwide. It is equipped with an ASIC with a transceiver and a baseband modem on the prototype of the FPGA. It supports chips below the 6GHz band and the millimeter wave band. This transceiver and millimeter wave antenna array has been formed.

We will be launching baseband samples in the first half of this year. It will take several months because the phones are standards-based. We want to ensure that the next generation of radio technology is applied to the products. Imagine if you use them in the oven. This product, then we may need to improve several functions.
The 5G modem is expected to be available in the second half of 2017. In addition to being placed in the car, you can use it in a more mobile design. If you want to test a smaller mobile device, you can try no one. Machine, AR or VR wireless headset, only you can't think of it, no it can't try.
Reporter: 5G looks good now. I still remember many other transition products. For example, in the 4G era, Verizon provides high data traffic services, but many people switched to T-Mobile, which is not good in voice communication quality. It seems that every new one The birth of communication technology will have such an episode.
Topol: First of all, it's no secret about 5G technology and features, but it's undeniable that wireless communication protocols such as Wi-Fi and Wi-Gig are also improving, which will lead to some new standards. You will see the new mobile business model, subscription mode, and you will also see multi-frequency unlicensed band data.
We are trying to build a product that works for both licensed and unlicensed technologies. Everyone only saw the early progress of the mobile phone, because the full deployment of the network will take a long time before commercialization. Early mobile devices such as network operators and infrastructure providers laid the foundation for network building. Often, you will see unauthorized technology and will improve it step by step.
You will see some application scenarios that rely on authorization technology, especially in high-speed transmission environments. Automated driving cars generate thousands of bytes of data through machine learning and network transmission, which makes the model change. 5G will be the way to communicate between machines. 5G can alleviate network congestion, realize communication between cars, cars and mobile devices, drones and mobile devices. 5G will improve network efficiency and improve the status of network congestion.

Reporter: How do you think that the amount of consumption will cause capacity problems? I remember that in the past CES, if everyone is using Wi-Fi, then if one of them watchs the live video, the network of others will slow down.
Topol : 5G There is a lot of innovation at this point. From a network perspective, as you probably know, we also provide solutions in terms of network facilities, which is the core of the access network - the cloud. 5G will use a "network chip" technology that allocates and protects frequency bands and data output rates for specific applications. This technology is also used exclusively for automotive communications or hotspots in large events. With this technology, you can avoid the network speed congestion problem you are talking about. These congestion problems are really tricky for network systems. However, the "network chip" we developed can solve these problems.
In addition, no matter how highly dense the network environment, millimeter wave technology can solve the network speed congestion problem, the network download speed we use today can reach several hundred Mbps, and with 5G millimeter wave technology, we can achieve At the speed of Gbps, the fiber can transmit a large amount of data, which perfectly solves the network congestion problem.
Reporter: How long do you think it will take to achieve full coverage of 5G?
Topol: OEMs can commercialize 5G solutions as early as next year, and full deployment of 5G networks is expected to be in 2020. Just like LTE, OEMs are not ready to represent 4G networks. It is expected that from 2018 to 2020, it will become the stage of 5G breakthrough. By 2020, most network operators can provide 5G services.
Reporter: At that time, can the US communication strength rival that of South Korea?
Topol: The United States is actively deploying 5G in the same way as other countries. From the US carrier's publication, we can see their ambitions. As I said, there must be early adopters. Why is Intel ready to solve the solution? What? Because there must be early adopters and promoters, but the full coverage of 5G may really have to wait until 2020. Before the 5G really arrives, the operator will first issue a notice.

Reporter: I have interviewed Gary Shapiro of CTA before. I asked him if his management and network neutrality issues will be put on the agenda. He said: "Maybe, but I care about why the US broadband is compared to other countries. It’s so expensive, and how can you afford it.†Once broadband costs are reduced, competition for network communications will become more intense, and many other businesses and consumers will benefit.
Topol : I don't have much thought about the way the model is quantified, but what I can tell you is that we are concerned with ensuring that the solution can be used for authorization or unauthorized. Although partners and OEMs have surpassed us in model building, 5G will bring me a disruptive business model. We will not follow the previous technology model, and this competition is exciting. We are ready, and we are confident that our solutions will be strongly supported in the industry.
Reporter: Do you have any other plans now?
Topol: Our ultimate goal is the end-to-end 5G solution. Intel played a leading role in computers and other technologies in the 4G era. But in the 5G era, Intel's computing intelligence and network capabilities will give Intel a greater advantage. This is exciting, I just want to make sure we have the ability to support these new business areas. Next year you will be able to see some of our 5G platform applications.

Reporter: The drone will collect a lot of data, which must be transmitted in some way (5G)?
Topol: It is true that you can use the same platform on cars, drones, VR. From this perspective, 5G is similar to artificial intelligence, and 5G technology is used in these devices. We will soon be able to build a test environment because we have a solution for these devices. We can provide the cloud, provide access to the core of the network, we establish a modem and AP for each device, if the partner says: "I want to test the AR in a 5G environment," then we can use these technologies. This is a milestone for us.
Our goal this year is to establish as many test environments as possible. We participate in CES every year, and we hope to bring more convenient and practical products to consumers.
Reporter: What position do you think Intel is in a competitive relationship with Qualcomm or other companies?
Topol: I don't know what Qualcomm's plan is, but last year we were the first company to launch the 5G mobile test platform. We first showed the RFICs supporting the 5G millimeter wave band, and now we are the first to show the first support below 6GHz. And millimeter-wave RFIC, and now we have released the first universal modem.
Our goal is to become the leader of 5G communication. Of course, there is still a lot of unknown for 5G, which may not work for all devices. What Intel can do is to ensure that the right technology and the right chip platform are developed. Partners can use these technologies and platforms to adjust and test different devices. .
