China Mobile Communications Group Sichuan Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Sichuan Mobile) bid for the 2013 ~ 2014 Internet TV licensee project was officially completed, and China Mobile Sichuan Internet TV business (OTT) was launched.
The OTT project in Sichuan is another pilot since China Mobile started testing the Internet TV business at the end of last year. Public information shows that China Mobile has piloted OTT projects in Jiangsu, Fujian, Qinghai and other cities. However, compared with the layout speed of China Telecom and China Unicom in the field of smart TV, China Mobile has been relatively slow.
Industry insiders pointed out that because China Mobile is only supported by China Railcom in terms of broadband, it has no advantage in bandwidth compared with traditional telecommunications operators; compared with newly emerging Internet companies, China Mobile ’s Internet TV technology reserve is weak. In the field of smart TV, China Mobile may be difficult to achieve profitability, its purpose is only to improve the business layout.
Deploy OTT business in Sichuan
According to public reports, the shortlisted licensees are Future TV Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Future TV), a subsidiary of China Network Television (CNTV) and China Guangdong Radio Network (Beijing) Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Oriental Network) ). In the future, both TV and Dongfang Network will be broadcast and television licensees who are qualified for integrated operation services of Internet TV. They will provide Sichuan Internet TV users with at least 100 standard definition, 20 high-definition live broadcast sources and no less than 100,000 hours of on-demand content.
Wang Yuquan, a senior telecom marketing and strategy consulting expert, told reporters from "Daily Economic News", "In terms of innovation capabilities, it (China Mobile) does not have the innovation capabilities of Internet companies and has no flexible mechanism. From the perspective of traditional operators It does n’t have the advantage of a fixed network. China Mobile may only focus on participation in Internet TV. "
"China Mobile owns China Netcom, a fixed-line network, but Tietong resources are generally along the railway. The network coverage area is limited, and communities over a few kilometers are more difficult to access the network. There are indeed no fixed-line advantages." Editor Wu Chunyong said.
Public reports show that since February 2012, China Mobile has piloted and built the world's largest 100G network, with a Beijing-Shanghai-Guangzhou-Hong Kong trunk line and a total investment of more than 3 billion yuan.
"Whether it is fixed network or mobile network bandwidth speedup, it is the most critical factor for operators to improve and expand their corresponding services." Wu Chunyong said.
In fact, in the field of smart TV, China Telecom and China Unicom have already taken the lead. In 2005, China Telecom launched an IPTV (Interactive Network Television) service in cooperation with Shanghai Culture and Broadcasting Corporation. It obtained the first IPTV license in China and gradually expanded to coastal provinces and cities. In 2010, China Unicom also proposed a pilot list of IPTV in the context of triple play.
Smart TV giants compete for hegemony
This year is called the "first year of Internet TV". Internet companies such as LeTV, Xiaomi, and iQiyi have successively launched TV boxes and Internet TV sets. Traditional TV manufacturers such as TCL, Changhong, and Skyworth have also joined the competition, and private broadband operators such as Aipu and Dr. Peng are not far behind.
At a time when Internet TV is hot, the public seems to have forgotten that China Telecom and China Unicom have already deployed their own IPTV that can simultaneously achieve live and on-demand content. In fact, the broadcast television system has already begun to lay out the next-generation broadcast television network (NGB) with its cable TV network architecture. It can also integrate and interact with information, entertainment, applications and messages on the TV screen.
From the current point of view, the NGB of the radio and television system, the IPTV of telecom operators, and the OTT business with the participation of Internet companies, the three have formed a "competitive" trend.
"What pattern will develop in the future, it is difficult to make clear now." Wang Yuquan said, but in the long run, Internet TV may take advantage of its innovative advantages and young people's consumption habits, but in the short term, because the profit model has not yet been formed, It depends on whose operations are more successful.
In Wu Chunyong's view, NGB and IPTV, which are also based on the metropolitan area network, should give up the current unconscionable attitude under the strong competition of Internet TV. "Many basic resources such as broadband resources can be shared. The current cable TV network is actually its own. The broadband upgrade has not yet been completed, which is a big bottleneck for the cooperation between the two sides, and the cooperation of the cable TV network is indeed a bit behind. "
Wu Chunyong believes that radio and television networks are at a disadvantage due to broadband resources and innovation capabilities, and are not very optimistic at this stage of competition, but the radio and television system does not seem to be willing to lag behind. As early as 2009, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television once stated that the radio and television network may become China's fourth largest operator.
In any case, the prospect of triple play should be worth looking forward to. "The ultimate goal is to open up all information transmission channels, so that education, medical and other industries can achieve interconnection through this channel. In addition, some new business growth points will also appear." Wu Chunyong said.
