Philips Lighting Reduces Carbon Emissions by 20% in 2017

Philips Lighting recently announced that its total carbon emissions in 2017 has decreased by 20% to 325,000 tons of carbon dioxide. At the same time, the proportion of renewable energy use increased from 67% to 80%, fully reflecting the company's progress towards 2016. The goal of the “Sparkling Life, Good World” sustainable development plan is progressing smoothly.

“Sustainability is at the heart of Philips' lighting business. With renewable energy utilization and carbon offsets, our carbon footprint can be reduced by 20%.” Nicola Kimm, head of sustainability at Philips Lighting, said, “This is what we achieved in 2020” Bright life, an important milestone in the journey of the beautiful world."

With this sustainability program, the company hopes to achieve carbon neutral operations by 2020, using 100% renewable energy, while achieving 80% of its sales from sustainable products, systems and services. In 2017, Philips Lighting's sustainable sales accounted for 77%.

At the same time, Philips Lighting's waste material landfills have been reduced by 26% compared to 2016, and the development of sustainable areas has been continuously expanded – 83% of R&D expenditures have been invested in sustainability-related innovations. The TrueForce LED family is one of the products of sustainable innovation, replacing high-pressure gas discharge lamps (HIDs) with LED technology. This product can help save nearly 75% of energy.

Since joining the “Global Lighting Challenge” program in 2015, by the end of 2017, Philips Lighting has sold 1.2 billion LED products, effectively reducing emissions of approximately 30 million tons of carbon dioxide2. This is a solid step towards the promise of selling 2 billion LED products in 2020.

Philips Lighting is ranked in the electrical component and equipment industry leader in the latest 2017 Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) assessment. It has also been accredited by the non-profit organization Global Environmental Information Research Center (CDP) and became the "Supplier Participation Leadership" company of 2018, which was included in the "Supplier Participation Leadership Committee". Philips Lighting is actively collaborating with its supplier partners to focus on carbon emissions and work together to address climate issues in all aspects of the supply chain. Based on the positive impact of Philips Lighting on reducing environmental impact, the Center for Environmental Information Research rated it as “Climate Change Level A”.
