Head-up display HUD (Head Up Display) is no longer a patent for fighters. HUD was once a high-tech configuration for luxury models, and now HUD has gradually become civilian. As shown below, the HUD of Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi, a large amount of color digital information is projected onto the windshield.
Below are Mazda and Peugeot's HUD, digital information projected onto a separate collapsible reflective glass in front of the windshield, but they display more monotonous information than luxury brands.
On the one hand, HUD, such as the form of driving information on the front windshield or reflective glass, is indeed a high-tech that can attract eyeballs. Of course, it can also be used as a profitable tool for manufacturers. On the other hand, HUD is a "altitude" configuration in many populations. Let's take a look at HUD today.
1, HUD advantages
(1) The HUD information display position is higher than that of the conventional combination meter. That is to say, when the driver wants to view the vehicle information, the HUD only needs to lower the head by 5-10°; if the combination meter is used, it needs to be 20-25° lower.
(2) When the driver views the driving information from the combination meter, the eyes are transferred from the road to the combination meter and then transferred to the road. Because the road brightness is high and the brightness of the combination meter (inside the vehicle) is low, the eyes will experience from light to dark. In the process of brightening, the pupil of the eye will be adjusted; at the same time, the gathering point of the eye will be from far to near and far. When the driver looks at the information from the HUD, the eyes do not need to be so tossed.
The above two aspects are combined. The driver can reduce the time of line of sight transfer, the change of eye pupil caused by line of sight change, and the change of eye focus point. The final result is that the driver's line of sight and attention are less deviated from the road. Improve driving safety.
2. What information can HUD display?
(Note: The following information may not be available, depending on the configuration of the HUD)
(1) Current speed. It is the most basic information of HUD. This information is especially important when the speed limit camera is everywhere on the city road, when driving at the highest speed limit or when the camera is decelerating.
(2) Navigation information. This is a very practical information, especially when there are many cars in the city and road navigation.
(3), red fault mark, red fault light appears, which means that the car will have a great safety hazard when it is opened.
(4) Driving assistance information, such as speed limit display, active lane keeping information, cruise information, etc., when using the car's high technology and making adjustments, this information can be displayed on the HUD, so that the driver does not have to look down at the instrument. adjust.
3. How is HUD implemented? (to project to the windshield as an example)
The principle of HUD is similar to slide projection. The light information emitted by the projector is reflected by the "mirror" onto the "projecting mirror", and then reflected by the "projecting mirror" to the "windshield". The human eye sees the virtual image located at 2-2.5 meters in front of the eye, giving The human feeling is that information is suspended in the road ahead.
The position of the HUD image on the windshield is adjustable, and the key to this is the "projector". By changing the angle of the "projection mirror", the position of the HUD image can be adjusted.
The windshield is curved, and if the image is projected directly on the curved glass surface, the image will be deformed. This requires a corrective action - so the "projector" and "mirror" are designed to be curved.
4. What are the key components of HUD?
(1) Projection unit
The projector unit integrates a projector, a mirror, a projection mirror, an adjustment motor and a control unit. The HUD control unit acquires information such as vehicle speed and navigation from the on-board data bus, and outputs an image on the projector.
(2) Windshield
Everyone may think, is this windshield special? Indeed, the left picture below shows the structure of the ordinary windshield sandwich. If the HUD image is projected onto the ordinary windshield, it is easy to form an image ghost and the projection effect is poor.
The PVB film inside the HUD windshield interlayer is wedge-shaped, that is, the glass is thick and thin, so that image ghosting is not formed.
It can also be seen from this that in order to reduce the cost of glass, the HUD system on most A and B-class cars will be equipped with a separate reflective glass (such as the Mazda and Peugeot HUD systems in the previous examples); On the other hand, the cost limit is not so tight, it will use the HUD windshield.
For the current post-installation HUD equipment, there are two design schemes, one is the DLP projection scheme represented by Navdy, except for most manufacturers of CarPro, which is represented by CarPro. TFT optical imaging solution. Both options have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Relatively speaking, TFT optical imaging solutions are relatively mature, which can bring clear display effects, but also bring high temperature problems. In this regard, CarPro CEO Shiqiang is not willing to specify, only reply "We have done a radiation, conduction, convection triple cooling system to solve this problem, can achieve 80 degrees environment can work properly."
As for the DLP projection scheme, there is a natural display and temperature disadvantage. TI has developed DLP chips for projection products, but it is now used in display products. This logic is somewhat awkward. Such a scheme is also criticized by the TFT faction. One of the views is that display and projection are two categories of functions. "(DLP scheme) is to project the content onto the micro display panel through the projector, and then the content of the display panel is transmitted to the imaging lens. To, so it is projection + reflection," AcTIsafety product HUD chief designer Anonymous Jian.
In this regard, the DLP solution is that although the TFT solution is mature, the cost cannot be reduced, the volume is not large, and the heat dissipation problem is difficult to solve. It is already a stereotype problem. But there is more room for DLP in the future.
Such as car radish, Had, CarPro, Carplus, HUDPLAY, Halo...
Compared with the fact that there were more than a dozen HUDs in Shenzhen last June, according to the incomplete statistics of CarPro's CEO, there are currently more than 30 in Shenzhen. Take a look at the head-up display HUD (Head Up Display) manufacturers.
1, car radish HUD
The car radish Carrobot is developed by Beijing Lejia Technology Co., Ltd., an intelligent on-board robot based on HUD+ voice control man-machine dialogue, which can greatly improve the safety of people driving.
The main function:
The car radish displays information through a HUD transparent projection screen placed on the instrument panel directly in front of the steering wheel, and realizes functions such as voice navigation, receiving a call, sending and receiving WeChat, and listening to songs and songs through voice control. Allowing users to drive safely while balancing navigation and communication, entertainment, and social needs, making driving safer and more enjoyable.
Core technology advantages:
In response to the core needs of the vehicle scene, the intelligent human-machine dialogue technology that is close to natural language communication has been developed. It can combine the semantics of the upper and lower semantics, intelligently understand the meaning that the user wants to express, and make corresponding operations. The product has extremely high technical barriers.
2, Harder HUD
The car network head-up display emerging technology company Had launched a smart HUD head-up display device.
The main function:
Harder Smart HUD has AR (Augmented Reality) reality enhancement technology, real-time fusion of real road scenes and projection information, such as passerby recognition, vehicle front distance measurement, traffic light recognition prompts and other information, through the combination with the actual scene becomes more vivid. At the same time, Harder HUD also has gesture recognition technology and voice recognition function, through gesture operation or voice interaction to answer calls, view SMS, WeChat and other common operations, greatly improving driving safety.
core advantages:
The premise of these functions is that the Harder Smart HUD uses advanced optical projection technology, adopts 50 lumens DLP display mode, 3 meters imaging 32 inch projection area, and can automatically adjust the brightness according to external light, even in extremely strong sunlight. Underneath, it can also be clearly displayed.
3, CarPro HUD
CarPro HUD is developed by Shenzhen Qianhai Zhiyun Valley Technology Co., Ltd., an innovative technology company specializing in independent research and development and operation of intelligent hardware for vehicle networking.
The main function:
CarPro's navigation includes a magnified view of the real intersection and a real-life electronic eye, which can hedge the problem that the HUD navigation display information is too simple under complicated road conditions. In addition, CarPro also supports voice check traffic conditions, as well as road traffic custom broadcasts, the ability to display real-time speed; the camera in front of the HUD mainframe has the function of driving records.
core advantages:
In terms of information presentation, CarPro uses the same TFT optical solution as the BMW HUD. The TFT solution has advantages in image purity, levitation, and projection distance. CarPro's imaging distance (the distance between the human eye and the displayed image) is 2 meters, while 2 meters allows people to switch the line of sight without having to switch frequently.
CarPro uses an Android system. For high temperature problems in summer cars, CarPro has an ambient storage temperature of 85 degrees Celsius and a working temperature of 80 degrees Celsius.
4, CarPlus HUD
The functions and ideas of CarPlus HUD are similar to those of Navdy. They all want to put "Google Glass" on the car and become the information center in the car.
The main function:
Through realistic enhancement technology, the information is projected in front of the driver's line of sight, and the external environment and system information are naturally combined. The driver can obtain all driving and navigation information without switching the line of sight. At the same time, it can read the notification of the smart phone, access the incoming call, and can control the voice. Reply to the text message, thoroughly and conveniently solve the pain points of the driver's mobile phone. In the new version of the design, fatigue reminders and road information recognition functions will be added to enhance driving safety for users.
Technical advantages:
Compared with other similar products, Car+ uses a deeply customized Android system to achieve more deeper functions. Many HUD products support information, but they are single-task, processing information and navigation intelligence. Not only that, Car+ can automatically plan the itinerary, call the map, and help users achieve zero-input navigation.
5, HUD PLAY head up display
HUD PLAY is the leading automotive smart head-up display with transparent HD display, which can be used for online navigation, receiving calls, sending and receiving text messages, WeChat, driving records, one-touch photos, entertainment listening to songs, etc., and information such as car data. Projected onto the windshield, no need to look down and look at the instrument and center console information to improve driving safety.
6, Navdy head-up display
A startup called Navdy in the United States is developing a HUD (Head-Up Display) for cars, so that you can easily view the information on your phone without leaving the front road. This full-color display device can be placed above the dashboard to display the car's current speed, travel route, and phone notifications.
The Navdy is equipped with a 5.1-inch (15.24 cm) transparent HUD that integrates high-quality projectors, infrared cameras for gesture control, accelerometers, and electronic compasses. Navdy built-in dual-core processor, running Android 4.4 system, supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE connection technology, built-in speaker and noise reduction microphone, connected to the car computer through the ODB interface.
summary
The intelligence of such hardware products is an irreversible trend, and these products may be more representative of the future direction of HUD. Since basically the HUD is installed on the OBD interface (power supply and vehicle data reading), the function of displaying the vehicle speed is available.
At the system level, these HUDs basically use the Andorid system, and then adjust the software according to the HUD interaction. In order to facilitate the connection of mobile phones, Bluetooth modules, WiFi are also available.
The current challenge is not only from the product itself, but also the inherent driving habits of consumers have affected the promotion of HUD to some extent. The arrival of future unmanned technology will merge it into an important part of driverless technology.
