HD Terminology and Naming Rules

At present, the publishing of high-definition resources on the Internet generally follows the following naming rules: movie name (Chinese + English). Source. Compression or processing method. Resolution. Video encoding. Because the specifications in the naming are separated by a dot separator (decimal point), therefore, H.264 is often abbreviated directly as H264 or & TImes; 264, so as not to affect reading.

So, what information can we read from these naming rules?

1. Source of film source: Blu-ray and HD DVD

Blu-ray is our familiar "Blu-ray" disc, or BD for short. In fact, from a technical point of view, both BD and HD DVD use a blue laser with a wavelength of 405nm as a read and write source, shouldn't they be called "blue light"?

1. BD = Blu-ray Disc, Blu-ray Disc, using a blue laser with a shorter wavelength (405nm) to read and write data, and hence the name.

So far, Blu-ray is the most advanced large-capacity disc format, and the huge advancement of BD laser technology allows you to store 25GB of document files on a single disc. This is 5 times that of existing (single disc) DVDs. In terms of speed, Blu-ray allows 1 to 2 times or 4.5 to 9 megabits per second recording speed.

2. HD DVD (or High DefiniTIon DVD) is a blue-beam optical disc product in a digital optical storage format, which has now developed into one of the high-definition DVD standards.

HD DVD can be divided into four categories: read-only HD DVD-ROM, single-write HD DVD-R, multiple-write HD DVD-RW and HD DVD-RAM. The specifications of HD DVD-RAM have not yet been finalized. As of February 2008, the technical versions of HD DVD-ROM and HD DVD-RW are 1.0, and HD DVD-R is 0.9.

Second, the processing method: HD Remux, HDRe, HDRip (similar to BD)

1. HD Remux, abbreviated as Remux, usually refers to the processing method of extracting the video and audio content in BD or HD DVD discs in a lossless manner and encapsulating them into files in a specific format (usually TS). It has not been re-encoded in any way, and the video and audio aspects are "authentic". However, the Remux movie will not have the playback menu and tidbits in the original disc, and the movie capacity is very large, which requires a long download time in the current network environment.

HDre is a processing method for re-encoding high-definition video streams in order to achieve a better balance between capacity, picture quality and sound quality. It does not re-encode the audio stream, so it can maintain a good sound quality performance. HDre-processed movies can at least reach a resolution of 720p or higher, so they are also part of the ranks of high-definition movies.

HDRip re-encodes both video and audio streams, and the volume is further reduced. The image quality performance is slightly worse than 720p, which is better than DVDRip, and the volume is also close to the latter. A complete HDRip movie generally only takes up 2GB to 4GB of storage space, which is convenient for communication between audio-visual enthusiasts. Of course, because the image quality is a bit worse than 720p, HDRip is usually divided into "standard definition" ranks.

2. Common resolutions: 720p, 1080i, 1080p, a1080, a720, 816p

The first three are the key indicators used to identify the resolution of HD movies. Among them, i and p followed by numbers are the abbreviations of Interlace scan and Progressive scan, while the numbers reflect the vertical resolution of high-definition movies.

Like 720p refers to 1280 & TImes; 720 progressive scanning, 1080i refers to 1920 & TImes; 1080 interlaced scanning, which is a naming rule that abbreviates the horizontal resolution of the signal source according to the established method. Reaching a resolution above 720p is the entry threshold for high-definition signal sources. The 720p standard is also called the HD standard, and 1080i / 1080p is called the Full HD (Full HD) standard.

The resolutions of some movies are a720 and a1080, which use anamorphic technology to obtain higher picture quality. A1080 generally includes 1440 × 1080 and 1280 × 1080 specifications, and the vertical resolution has reached the standard of 1080p. Through the horizontal expansion during playback, the resolution close to Full HD is achieved. A720 generally adopts the specifications of 960 × 720, and some of them are as low as 852 × 720.

The 816p is not a standard resolution. It is used to re-encode, in order to effectively use, reduce capacity, use AVS software to cut the upper and lower black borders. For example, the film ratio of 1920 × 1080 resolution is 1.78: 1, the actual content is 2.35: 1 wide screen, and after removing the black border, it is 1980 × 816. You can also use deformation technology to reduce the horizontal pixels to 1440, and finally become 1440 × 816.
