1. NI hardware platform selection for machine vision applicationsNI machine vision hardware products range from smart cameras to stand-alone machine vision systems to powerful PXI and PC-based solutions. These hardware platforms vary in many ways, including form factor and performance, with each platform being adapted to different environments, applications, and system architectures.

The highest performance NI CompactRIO and NI Single-Board RIO controllers also provide image acquisition and processing at low bandwidth. This can be achieved by using smaller image resolutions, lower speeds, and higher image compression than other machine vision platforms.

2. Software and operating system supportThe NI Machine Vision Software Package is designed to run on the hardware selection shown in Figure 1. This means you can switch between platforms and reuse most of the existing code on these machine vision hardware targets. You can also reduce development time and maintenance costs for multiple systems by maintaining a single package.
The CompactRIO and NI Single-Board RIO platforms only support the NI Machine Vision Development Module image processing library, but do not support the NI Vision Builder for automatic detection.
In addition to the NI LabVIEW graphical programming environment on all platforms, you can take advantage of the NI Machine Vision Development Module, which uses text-based development in C, C++, Visual Basic, and .NET languages ​​(Visual Basic .NET and C#).
