Toshiba Introduces Brushed Motor Pre-Driver IC for Automotive Applications

Tokyo-Toshiba Corporation today announced the introduction of a brushed motor [1] pre-driver chip (IC) - TB9052FNG for automotive applications. Sample shipments will be launched in August, and volume production is scheduled to start in March 2015.

Safety-critical automotive systems such as electric power steering (EPS) must meet the requirements of ASIL-D [2]. ASIL-D is the highest automotive safety integrity level described in ISO 26262 "Road Vehicles - Functional Safety". Toshiba's new brushed motor pre-driver IC integrates key functions, including pre-driver circuit [3] and motor current sense circuit [4], as well as various fault detection circuits for higher functional safety.

In addition, Toshiba has conducted a series of functional safety analyses to simulate various system failures, and will also provide customers with log files to support safety analysis and design.

Main features of new products

1. Built-in motor current detection circuit

o Simplifies the system and reduces printed circuit board (PCB) size.

2. Redundant functions for functional safety

o Redundant configuration for functionally safe motor current sensing circuits.

3. Motor control mode can be selected

o Depending on the system, internal logic control or pass-through control can be selected.

4. When a fault is detected, the pre-drive operation can be selected.

o When a fault is detected, it can be controlled by the pre-driver itself or by the Micro Control Unit (MCU).

Main specification

  · [1]: Motor with commutator (brush)

· [2]: ASIL: Automotive Safety Integrity Level

· [3]: Pre-driver controls the MOSFET of the drive motor

· [4]: Convert from motor current to voltage and output to MCU

· [5]: Detect short-circuit fault between drain and drive source (MOSFET)
